How It Works

1

Paste

Paste any GitHub URL: a full repository, a specific directory, or a single file. All public GitHub URLs are supported.

2

Convert

Our server walks the repo, filters out noise (binaries, images, node_modules), and assembles clean Markdown with syntax-highlighted code blocks.

3

Copy or Download

Copy the result to your clipboard or download it as a .md file, ready to paste into Claude, ChatGPT, or any editor.

Binary files, images, and node_modules are automatically skipped. The converter respects .gitignore rules.

Why Convert a GitHub Repo to Markdown

LLMs can reason over an entire codebase when it arrives as a single Markdown document. Instead of copying files one by one, you get the full directory tree, all source files, and their contents assembled in one artifact you can paste directly into Claude, ChatGPT, or any other model. This makes full-codebase analysis, refactoring suggestions, and architecture reviews practical in a single prompt.

Onboarding new team members is faster when you can hand them a self-contained Markdown snapshot of a repository. The directory tree gives orientation, the source files give depth, and the whole thing renders cleanly in GitHub, Notion, Obsidian, or any static site generator. No repo access required during the reading phase.

Code audits, compliance reviews, and technical due diligence all benefit from a clean, readable export. Reviewers can search, annotate, and comment in any Markdown editor without needing to clone the repository or configure a local environment.

Want the deeper walkthrough? The repo to Markdown guide covers what makes a conversion LLM-ready, and the GitHub repo to Claude workflow shows the full loop from URL to working prompt.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I convert private repositories?

Not yet. The converter currently works with public repositories only. OAuth authentication for private repos is on the roadmap.

Is there a size limit?

Yes. The converter processes up to 75,000 lines of source code and makes up to 40 GitHub directory API calls per request. Very large monorepos may exceed this limit — converting a specific subdirectory instead usually works.

Is it free?

Yes, completely free. No account, no sign-up, no credit card required. Just paste a URL and convert.

What do “repo to md” and “git to md” mean?

They are shorthand for converting a Git repository into a Markdown (.md) file, which is exactly what this tool does. One repository in, one .md file out, ready for any LLM or editor.

How do I use the output with Claude or ChatGPT?

Copy the result to your clipboard and paste it into the chat, or download the .md file and attach it. The GitHub repo to Claude walkthrough covers prompting patterns once the repo is loaded.

How does this compare to the Chrome extension?

The CopyMarkdown Chrome extension converts web pages to Markdown client-side — nothing leaves your browser. This GitHub converter works server-side via the GitHub API to walk repository file trees, which the browser cannot do on its own. Use the extension for web pages; use this tool for GitHub repos.

Does it work with GitLab or Bitbucket?

Not yet. GitHub is the only supported host at the moment. GitLab and Bitbucket support are on the roadmap. In the meantime, the GitLab to Markdown guide covers the manual conversion options.

What file types are included?

The converter includes 50+ source code and config file types: Python, JavaScript, TypeScript, Go, Rust, Java, C/C++, Ruby, PHP, Shell, SQL, HTML, CSS, YAML, TOML, JSON, Markdown, Dockerfiles, and more. Binary files, images, compiled artifacts, and node_modules are automatically excluded.

What about PDFs and other documents?

For converting PDFs, Word documents, PowerPoints, and other files to Markdown, use our PDF to Markdown converter. It handles file uploads with auto-detection and instant cleanup.
